Against The Clout Cycle [Podcast Video]

All the controversy over Nico Leonard and Christopher Ward got me thinking about watch “influencers,” and their impact on Horology. And the answer is: none. Their hot takes will be quickly forgotten while these brands stay busy building their legacies. Christopher Ward should pay no mind to this hogwash, as they have. CW have stayed out of the fray. They don’t need to remind true fans that they have plenty of absolutely unique, stunning designs in their reference line up. Meanwhile, these same influencers are peddling “opinions” for penny clicks to pay their rent. All it takes is an algorithm change, or monetization switch up to alter the trajectory of their temporary fame. The arrogance of having an opinion is overrated. Mind you, Leonard is not just some bloke with an opinion. He’s someone who has an opinion with mass distribution (for now). It’ll serve him well to deliver his opinion with some honesty and integrity (or with at least some basic research). If he thinks the latest C60 Trident Biscay is a copy cat, what about their moon phase? Or their award winning Bel Canto? He’s otherwise trying to tank the entire brand with a very short-sighted analysis.
